Women’s Studies Research Center/Brandeis University
515 South Street, Waltham
LEFT ON PEARL [50 min. black and white film] addresses a 1971 “takeover” of a Harvard-owned building by women seeking to establish a women’s center. Making the situation more contentious was the building’s location — on property sought after by Cambridge’s African-American community for affordable housing. Special guests: Diane Balser and Rochelle Ruthchild will share their experience leading the history-making women’s march, takeover, and production of the film, that resulted in the longest continuously-operating Women’s Center.
Co-sponsors include: Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism, Brandeis University; Gender Working Group (GWG), Heller School, Brandeis; Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies Program of Boston University; The Brighton-Allston Historical Society; and Dr. Shulamit Reinharz, Director, WSRC.
