“I Want to Go to Jail” – Suffrage Play
February 9, 2019, 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
An original play by Pamela Swing and Elizabeth Dabanka
This short, original play transports you back to February, 1919, when women suffragists grappled with unexpected obstacles in their quest for the final vote needed to pass the suffrage amendment. In the span of the play, suffragists picket President Wilson at the Boston State House, are arrested and serve time in the Charles Street Jail. Their time in prison is cut short in a surprising way. These were the last arrests of the suffrage movement.
Q and A following the performance will address issues of voting rights then and now.
Free and open to the public
NOTE: Betty Gram Swing, grandmother of co-playwright Pamela Swing, was one of the suffragists arrested in Boston and also in Washington, DC.
